Prior Oral Surgery

 

INFORMATION FOR PATIENTS WHO ARE HAVING SURGERY UNDER SEDATION

PLEASE ARRIVE 15 MINUTES EARLIER THAN SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT TIME

The Patient must have nothing to eat or drink, including water, for 6 hours before surgery.

Please refrain from smoking on the day of surgery.

If your surgery is before 1 p.m.:

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before your surgery.
This means that you are not even allowed to have water.

If your surgery is 1 p.m. or later:

You may have a light breakfast before 7 a.m. on the day of your surgery.
Do not eat or drink anything after 7 a.m.

PATIENTS WHO HAVE DIABETES:
Unless you have been told otherwise, DO NOT take insulin or diabetic pills the morning of your surgery.
Bring the insulin or diabetic pills with you to the office.
You will have a Fasting Blood Sugar test when you are in the office.

PATIENTS WHO ARE TAKING MEDICATION:
If you usually take medication in the morning, take it with a sip of water before coming to the office unless you have been instructed to do otherwise.
DO NOT take diabetic medication unless your doctor tells you to.

The Patient is advised to abstain from smoking from midnight the night before surgery.
Please wear loose fitting clothing, including a short sleeve shirt.
Do not wear nail polish and only minimal application of make-up.
DO NOT wear contact lenses
If you have dental insurance, you will be given an insurance estimate at the time of your consultation. Your insurance may not cover the entire cost of your treatment, so it is important for you to submit the estimate in order to determine the level of benefits. The patient is responsible for any balance, which is not covered by your insurance.
If you use oral contraceptives, please be aware that some antibiotics reduce contraceptive reliability.

 

Please note:

A responsible adult MUST bring the patient to our office and remain here to receive home-care instructions. Following completion of the surgery and an appropriate recovery period, a responsible adult must accompany the patient. We suggest that a responsible adult remain with the patient to care for him/her throughout the next 24 hours. We suggest that you do not plan any activities for a day or two following your surgery.
